Sample Poem

Adam's New Girl

She comes to me from realms beyond our earth,
a beauty with a mind beyond our own,
intending to assess all mankind's worth.
Thus, I'm afraid to be with her alone.
She knows our kind are greedy and unjust,
as her kind were before our earth was here.
I'm sure if I succumb to wanton lust
I'll validate her doubts all bout our sphere.
"Not so,", she said though I'd not said a word,
"aggression, greed and hate can all go way,
but losing human lust would be absurd."
I'm here as Eve, with kinder DNA.
I've chosen you, I'm glad you're not deterred,
Undo my fittings while your lust is stirred."

Hybrid Sonnet

I am using this name to indicate the variations between the Italian Sonnet and the English Sonnet as early as the 1600's with the purpose to forestall my inadvertently assigning the name of the form to a current poet who should use it.

C. Hybrid Sonnet
1. Rhyme Scheme: abba abba cdcd ee
[other variations: abab cdcd efgefg or
abab cdcd efefef or abba cddc effe gg]
2. Who Used: Sidney, Donne

Read Conrad's "Heart of Darkness",

Example Poem

Holy Sonnet # 1 by John Donne

Thou hast made me, and shall Thy work decay?
Repair me now, for now mine end doth haste;
I run to death, and Death meets me as fast,
And all my pleasures are like yesterday.
I dare not move my dim eyes any way;
Despair behind, and Death before doth cast
Such terror, and my feeble flesh doth waste
By sin in it, which it towards hell doth weigh.
Only Thou art above, and when towards Thee
By Thy leave I can look, I rise again;
But our old subtle foe so tempteth me,
That not one hour myself I can sustain.
Thy grace may wing me to prevent his art
And thou like adamant draw mine iron heart.

The Holy Sonnets, also known as the Divine Meditations or Divine Sonnets, are a series of nineteen poems. Twelve of them were published in the 1633 collectionSongs and Sonnets; others were published in later collections.— Excerpted from Holy Sonnets on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Teddybard Sonnet

This is a sonnet form invented by Teddybard of Allpoetry.

It is identified by the Rhyme Pattern: aaaabbccddeeff Normal sonnet attributes apply.

Example Poem

Not to be Relinquished

Since every guy asked you to dance
I never thought I'd have a chance
to even profit from your glance,
much less to entertain romance.
I thought about you every day
your face, your hair, your gentle sway,
your kind response to all you'd meet,
your gentle voice which sounds.so sweet.

I'd wandered near your vacant chair
and when your partner brought you there
I mumbled "Hi!" held out my hand
I hadn't waited for the band.

In your warm arms I felt befriended.
We danced on when music ended.

Weaver's Sonnet

This is a sonnet form first created by Tim Weaver, aka Poeticweaver on Allpoety
The form may be penned in the meter of the poet's choice
although iambic tetrameter is the original choice.
The defining characteristic is the rhyme pattern: aabb cdcd efef gg
The sonnet may be written with no volta but is one is chosen
it should take place at line 5 or line 13.

Death Never Splits True Love Apart

There comes a time we lose our grace
Wilted flowers in faded vase
No-one can ever take love's place
One last embrace to plead my case

Love climbs and crumbles all the time
Though with each verse reveals the cold
Weavers of words inscribe each line
Though love divine seeks never gold

I hear your cries after I breathe
Though death has taken hold of two
There's no true love that can deceive
So know I'm grateful I found you

Rags to bareness, with crooked spine
My lover friend your soul's divine

South African Quilt

This is a form invented by Angela Jacobs,  it was, as I understand her very first sonnet written.

It is defined by the Rhyme scheme: aabb ccdd efg efg

It is presumed that the poet has the choice of meter and line-length.

The volta should occur at or beyond line 9.

Example Poem

I Loved a Nymph     (South African Quilt)

Most every man believes he wants a maid
whose nymphomania is just displayed
when he and she are intertwined in lust,
and is has shapely form and ample bust.

I found just such a nymphet, by the way,
and we conjoined at least four times a day.
Had I an independent source of wealth
the exercise would have sustained my health.

But should your work or schooling make demands
you must then measure well your final aim,
for her own needs can not take second place.

She will find all attention she commands
there is no lack of guys to play her games.
so you must steel yourself to share with grace.

Doggonnet

This form was invented by Larry Eberhart, aka Lawrencealot on AP.

It was spawned by the apparent fixation contest hosts had with brevity at the time.

This is what would be called a "gadget" sonnet.

They rhyme scheme is that of an English Sonnet: abab cdcd efef gg
All lines are six syllables.
REQUIRED:
Two of the quatrains MUST be iambic trimeter.
The other quatrain MUST be trochaic trimeter.

The couplet may be either meter.

Example Poem

Ain't That a Bitch?

She's a cute and tiny
pup I think I'll like,
Don't she have a hiney?
Where'd ya find her, Mike?

You fabricated her?
She's just an artifact?
and that's not really fur?
That's me in the abstract?

I'm gonna be depressed
I'm ready for a mate.
But facts must be confessed.
I'll be content to wait…

     before the dating starts,
find one with all the parts.

Countess' Grief 1

This form was named by Jose Rizal M. Reyes
It consists of three quatrains and a couplet, but the couplet itself
does not rhyme.

The Rhyme scheme is:  abba cddc eefg gf

Example Poem

My poet never lets me run and play
and crash and boom and flash the room and flirt.
"Wear this! ",he says, and not the mini-skirt.
"A sonnet form?  No take that thing away.

You say you won't undress me like your whore.
I want to tease and titillate, you jerk
this rigid form I will not wear to work!
I won't set one small iamb out that door."

"Look you most silly filly of a verse,
I could wrap your fine curves in something worse-
a double dactyl or a free verse cough.
Try this, for me today and make me proud,

if you do that, tonight you'll be allowed
to loosen this, or maybe take it off. "

Amanda's Dark Sonnet

This form was invented by Amanda J Norton who writes on Allpoetry.com.

It is a sonnet consisting of two seven line stanza's.

The first letters of each line form a two word acrostic, which must be alliterative.

The rhyme scheme is as follows: aabbcca abbccdd

Each line is 14 syllables although iambic heptameter is not required.
Although I inquired, the author gave no indication that a volta is required.
It must be about a "dark" topic.

Example Poem

 Dangled Darling     (Amanda's Dark Sonnet)

D  "Do you love only me?" she asked. She asked me every day.
A  "And if you do, why do we do most everything your way?"
N  Now she was perfect starting out, complying every night
G  glad I'd removed her from the street and made her work-load light.
L  Less happy though was she to know that I used chains and whips
E  engaging her with other girls and taking her on trips
D  down in my dungeon where unseen and slimy creatures play.

D  Don't do this, and don't to that, more resistant day by day,
A  and naturally I can't have that. Mine is a vampires site.
R  Retraint now hold her to the wall where all may suck and bite
L  Lenore, Lenore you're free no more we're taking vampire sips
I  in fact the slimy creepy things seem to prefer your hips.
N  Now when we're though and done with you you'll be one of us my dear.
G  Go now to sleep my love; you look delicious hanging here.
