Morya's Double Lock

Two quatrains plus two tercets
Rhyme scheme: abba baab cdc dcd
Volta at or following line 9

This is a form invented by Jose Rizal M. Reyes of the Philippines

Example Poem

Morning's Gift     (Morya's Double Lock)

I catch a fleeting glimpse- a waking dream
of sirens frolicking to start their day.
They're full of joy, it seems that they're at play;
I want to join them in the nearby stream.

I often wave with hopes that one will stay
but they all vanish in the rising steam.
They are but a mirage, so it would seem,
but still I'm buoyed by morning's brief ballet.

I don't despair their passing from my sight
the morn is brighter, sound now come awake;
as critter scamper, pretty birds take flight.

If fantasy, or optical mistake
it none-the-less says things have started right.
and for a dreamer, that's a decent break.

South African Quilt

This is a form invented by Angela Jacobs,  it was, as I understand her very first sonnet written.

It is defined by the Rhyme scheme: aabb ccdd efg efg

It is presumed that the poet has the choice of meter and line-length.

The volta should occur at or beyond line 9.

Example Poem

I Loved a Nymph     (South African Quilt)

Most every man believes he wants a maid
whose nymphomania is just displayed
when he and she are intertwined in lust,
and is has shapely form and ample bust.

I found just such a nymphet, by the way,
and we conjoined at least four times a day.
Had I an independent source of wealth
the exercise would have sustained my health.

But should your work or schooling make demands
you must then measure well your final aim,
for her own needs can not take second place.

She will find all attention she commands
there is no lack of guys to play her games.
so you must steel yourself to share with grace.

Arabian Onegin Sonnet

The author assumes the metric and pivotal requirements are the standard for the sonnet.
Onegin is pronouced Oh NAY gin

Rhyme scheme: AaAa BBbb CdC DDd
Meter: Consistent or iambic pentameter
Structure: Two quatrains followed by two tercets with a pivot or volta at line 9 or line 12
End-line Refrain Words

Example Poem:

Touch My Heart     (Arabian Onegin Sonnet)

When I can't touch you just to show my love
I must find other ways I know, my love.
My acts must speak when pushing comes to shove.
That sense of loss I must now get ridof.

An illness causes you to seem remote
Ignorance let it make me act remote.
As sense of loss had grabbed me by the throat.
Your acts of love alone kept me afloat.

A selfish focus on my loss hid yours,
and fibromyalgia has no cures.
I must convince you dear, my love is yours.

Our music physically was but one realm,
but we've connected on most every realm.
We'll let no losses ever overwhelm.

Canadian Sonnet - Italian Structure

This is a form invented by Jose Rizal M. Reyes of the Philippines
Unique in  presentation as 2 quatrains + 2 Tercets
Generally Iambic Pentameter
Volta at line 9
Rhyme Scheme: abba cddc eff egg
Same rhyme pattern as Bowlesian Sonnet.

Example Poem:

Today's Best     ( Canadian  Sonnet - Italian Structure )

The editor demands my very best
with ocean's depth and pictures for one's mind.
Let waterfalls of syllables combine
while melodies of sounds they manifest.

Just that and nothing less is all that's asked.
The pen is poised and pauses while I think -
perhaps I scratch my beard and sip a drink,
before returning, determined, to my task.

Oh, hell! How often does one sit to write
a piece of crap to merely fill a page?
Real poets don't do that in any age.

We never set out trying to be trite.
Our very best attempt are made in vain
When mind's creative cogs get clogged again.

Tell Me of Your Anger in Whispers (Sarabande Sonnet)

If you should speak in anger, dear
first speak where only you can hear
to be assured your meaning's clear.

If meaning's clear then is it fair?
is blame essential to be found?
Are words intended to repair,
and will they guide toward common ground?

Perhaps they ought to disappear
until your anger is not here,
for thrown, they travel like a spear.

The ripples spread out everywhere.
Use whispers closely, late tonight.
Just say you're angry- for I care.
And honey I will make it right.

Rondel Prime Sonnet

French Sonnet or Rondel Prime is simply a Rondel with an second refrain added to the end of the poem. This verse form unlike most sonnets is usually syllabic. The sonnet was introduced to France in the 16th century by Clemont Marot (?-1544).

The defining features of the Rondel Prime or French Sonnet are:
• a quatorzain, an octave made up of 2 quatrains followed by a sestet.
• isosyllabic, the classic French sonnet is written in Alexandrine lines but this sonnet form can also be found in 8 syllable lines or the lines can be an number of syllables as long as the measure is consistent throughout the poem. In English it is found written in iambic pentameter or Alexandrine lines.
• rhymed ABba abAB abbaAB, A and B being refrains.
• composed with 2 refrains. L1 is repeated in L7 and L13, L2 is repeated in L8 and L14.
• composed with a pivot or turn somewhere after L8.

Pasted from <http://www.poetrymagnumopus.com/index.php?showtopic=1060>

Example Poem:

Reflecting             (Rondel Prime Sonnet)

When desolation grabs your heart and forces tears
Let nature speak, reminding you not all is known.
When you, so young were taken to the funeral biers
my faith was shattered; all beliefs and hopes were thrown

away.  I felt no comfort thinking heaven's spheres
could somehow recompense for earthly love we'd grown.
When desolation grabs your heart and forces tears
Let nature speak reminding you not all is known.

I went to our lagoon, our waterfall appears
today to look like you, and hope renewed is sown
into my soul.  We lived and loved! This thought coheres.
That truly shines. Remember we are just on loan.
When desolation grabs your heart and forces tears
Let nature speak reminding you not all is known.

Pope John XXIII Sonnet

2 quatrains + couplet + quatrain
Generally Iambic Pentameter
Would lend itself well to Tetrameter
Volta Optional
2 Quatrains + Couplet+ Quatrain
Rhyme scheme:  aaaa bbbb cc dddd
This is a form invented by Jose Rizal M. Reyes of the Philippines

Example Poem:

Papacy Pleasing Poetry      (Pope John XXIII Sonnet)

Now Jose' chose to honor previous Pope,
by naming sonnet form with which to cope
when writing of some warm religious hope.
Oh, I expect you might expand its scope.

A pro-abortion poem ought not use
this form.  There are so many more to choose.
But satirists we know like to bemuse,
abuse, confuse and thereby, yes amuse.

The mono-rhyme will lend itself to play
with poems that are light and mainly gay.

Now since the Pope spread happiness and light,
this form can help you do so when you write.
Composed in tetrameter you just might
Deliver verse written to recite.

French Sonnet

Historically, the French sonnet appears sometime after the Italian sonnet
and was likely the inspiration for the English sonnet form.
It uses fourteen lines of Alexandrine meter (iambic hexameter,
six iambs, twelve syllables per line)

Like the Italian and the English it has an octave comprising two quatrains,
but unlike the Italian and like the English it has a sestet of a couplet and a quatrain.
It is possible that the English sonnet was derived from the French not the Italian.

The difference being that the English grouped the Quatrains together
and turned (Volta) with a couplet the last two lines,
but the French turned with the sestet and used the quatrain to close.

The form has exactly the same quatrain as the Petrarch - a.b.b.a...a.b.b.a.
The sestet begins with a couplet - c.c., but like the Italian sestet, we have a choice of quatrains to play with. - d. e. e. d.
or more French, - d. c. c. d.
or more English - d. e. d. e

Example Poem:

Tell Me of Your Anger in Whispers (French Sonnet)

Should you be moved at times to speak in anger, dear,
I only ask that first you test your words alone.
Because if anger stems from blunders of my own
I'm sure you'll want to be assured your meaning's clear.

Remember words once thrown will travel like a spear
and meanings take on color weighed much by tone.
So package words with giggles not with growl or groan
and then the thoughts that form those words might disappear.
Delay those words, re-think, and then reformulate.
and later will be your time to pontificate.

I stumble much to often; you are usually right.
Is it really essential now that blame be found,
or can our words proceed toward a common ground?
My dear, use whispers closely to me late at night.

Pushkin Sonnet

This was the most difficult form to research.  Most sites have the information wrong or incomplete. I am going to post what I have determined is the most likely true and accurate information available, and post links to those sites allowing me to draw that conclusion.  My template below shows the most currently used form first, followed by the REAL Puskin Sonnet specifications.  Note the REQUIREMENT for feminine rhyme.  Usually ignored.

rhyming pattern: abab ccdd eff egg,  (Where red letters are feminine rhyme)

Visual Template:

The Pushkin or Onegin sonnet has a fascinating and flexible
profluence, which makes it suitable for the kind of modern
narrative use that Pushkin (and more recently Vikram Seth)
put it too. As someone with an interest in narrative poetry
I’ve been meaning to learn the form for a while, and this
experiment is a foray in that direction.

I think it illustrates nicely the role of the four-foot
iambic line over the five-foot line used in Petrarchan
and Shakespearean sonnets. The shorter line is bouncier,
tighter and generally draws the reader forward in ways
that the naturally punctuated pentameter does not.
The five-foot line is complete, and requires the reader
to push on over it.
The four-foot line leaves the breath wanting more.

________

This form was described as a "mettlesome creature" and A.D.P Briggs in his introduction to Evgeny Oneginstates that Pushkin invented a sonnet form which can go either way becoming Italian or English at the flick of a switch in mid stanza.

The Octave rhymes - a. b.a. b.....c.c. d.d.....

(Note) The first quatrain uses an alternating rhyme, and the second one, two couplets.

The sestet is where the change occurs and also expands the form. The original Pushkin sestet was either two tercets e.f.f.... e.g.g. and here you can see the Italian influence,

Below are the poems used in the template.

Pentameter (non-standard):

This formulaic stanza has some power
despite its tendency to come and go,
yielding up a soft and scented flower
with sufficient patience: watch it grow
into a bloom of rich diversity
without engaging in perversity.
It varies in division, oft askance
like some exotic cell’s mitotic dance
around the mysteries of generation
it splits into uneven halves or more,
a clash of fragments, three or even four,
that form into a long and bold narration.
Yet in the end it’s form that sets us free
to discipline our thoughts and clearly see.

Tetrameter (standard):

This formulaic stanza’s power
although it tends to come and go,
will yield a soft and scented flower;
with patience you can watch it grow
into a bloom: diversity
in absence of perversity.
It divides so oft  askance,
a single cell’s mitotic dance
in mysteries of generation
of two uneven halves or more,
a clash of fragments, three or four,
that form into a bold narration.
Yet by its form we are set free
to use our mind to clearly see.

Arabian Sonnet

A quatorzain made up of 2 quatrains + 2 tercets.
metric, iambic pentameter.
rhymed, aaaa bbbb ccc ddd.
Volta on the 9th line.

Sample Poem:

Tell Me of Your Anger in Whispers (Arabian Sonnet)

A silence is most fine thing when irate.
It's wise of you my dear, therefore, to wait,
re-think the message goal and contemplate
how goals are reached when embraced by your mate.

If my own blunder may have made you mad
a defensive re tort might well be bad
when thoughtful comment ought to now be had.
Let's frame discussion so to make you glad.

Perhaps, the words should simply disappear.
Unleashed, harsh words will travel like a spear.
Use calm and dulcet tones I love to hear.

We want to solve a problem, not to fight.
My love, use whispers closely late tonight.
I love you dearly; I will make it right.
